A Powerful Occasion when Rosenior Breaks Barriers

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent tactician who knows the game inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, as Chelsea's first black footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this news doesn't move me."

Those are the words expressed by Paul Canoville, who made his historic first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, the club named RC Strasbourg manager Rosenior, 41, to be their next head coach after the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also controls the London club.

Statistics show just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including individuals in interim roles – in England's top flight since it began 34 years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is that he grew up and developed his game locally, he knows the local fans," added Canoville.

"When children observe a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions equality… it is powerful demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, this represents an enormous step for the club, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Statistics Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' head coach back in the nineties and became the Premier League's inaugural African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black manager in the top flight when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with an absence of representation in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023 report, 43% of Premier League footballers are from black heritage.

Yet, research from Kick It Out found just 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are from ethnically diverse communities.

At senior coaching positions, according to figures provided by eleven clubs, the figure stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," stated Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of talent present within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches want a chance to demonstrate their capabilities. It is imperative to persist in work hard to break those obstacles once and for all."

Additionally, Rosenior is set to become the fourth full-time English managers presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other major leagues regarding national representation.

Sixteen of the 20 first division managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 in La Liga in Spain, 12 of the 18 in Germany while Ten of the 18 are French.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I'm sure all aspiring British coaches from an academy background are, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational for young English academy coaches to witness an individual get such a role with that profile and we hope he will be really well."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of West London clubs, the Hammers as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a brief spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he received an MBE in that year's Honours List for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

After Liam hung up his boots he followed his father's footsteps. He began writing articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not influence coaching skill arguing that roles must be awarded based on qualification.

He also made the view he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted how his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "emotional", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him with a move from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" upon hearing an unnamed coach utter a homophobic slur. He vowed his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.
