At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
