The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
