Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these drugs should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
